The French conditional: je voudrais, je pourrais

The conditional is the future stem with the imparfait endings: je parlerais, nous finirions, ils vendraient. It says what would happen (si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais), makes a request polite (je voudrais un café) and gives advice (tu devrais dormir). The tables show the regular verbs, the irregular stems it shares with the future, and the three verbs used most for politeness.

The conditional: future stem + imparfait endings

Future stem + imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient). Used for hypothetical results, polite requests (je voudrais), and future-in-the-past in reported speech.

— I would like a coffee, please.
  • À ta place, je partirais. — In your place, I would leave.

Je voudrais, pourriez-vous: the polite conditional

The present conditional softens a request or wish into deference: je veux (I want) sounds blunt to demanding, while je voudrais / j'aimerais and pourriez-vous ? are the neutral polite baseline. Using the present indicative for a request instead can sound curt.

— I would like a coffee, please.
  • Pourriez-vous m'indiquer la sortie ? — Could you show me the way out?
  • Auriez-vous l'heure, par hasard ? — Would you happen to have the time?

Si-clauses: if…, then…

The three kinds of si-clause

The 'if' si never takes a conditional or a future (si meaning 'whether' can: je ne sais pas s'il viendra). Real: si + présent → futur. Hypothetical present: si + imparfait → conditionnel présent. Past unreal: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé.

  • Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais. — If I had time, I would travel.
  • Si tu avais étudié, tu aurais réussi. — If you had studied, you would have passed.

Si + present: what will happen

For a real/likely condition, si takes the present indicative and the result is present, future, or imperative: si tu veux, tu peux venir; s'il fait beau, nous sortirons. si elides to s' only before il/ils.

— If it's sunny tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.

Si + imparfait, then the conditional

For an unreal or unlikely present/future situation, si takes the imparfait and the result clause the conditionnel présent: si j'avais de l'argent, j'achèterais une maison; si j'étais toi, je partirais.

— If I had time, I would travel more.

questions

Can you use the conditional after si?

Not in the clause with si: si + imparfait, and the conditional in the other clause — si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais, never 'si j'aurais'.

What is the difference between je voudrais and je veux?

Je veux is 'I want'; je voudrais is 'I would like', the polite way to ask in a shop or a café. Je veux can sound blunt.
