Spanish verb conjugation chart

Two tables per verb (poder has one): the present, the preterite, the imperfect, the future and the conditional side by side, then the present subjunctive and the imperative. The three regular models — hablar, comer and vivir — show the endings every regular verb takes; ser, estar, ir, tener, hacer and poder are the irregular verbs you need from the first week. The present perfect, built from haber and the participle, closes the page.

Compound tenses: haber + participle

A compound tense is two words: a form of haber and the participle, which does not change. Here, the present perfect.

The present perfect: haber + participle
Personhablarcomervivir
yohe habladohe comidohe vivido
túhas habladohas comidohas vivido
él, ella, ustedha habladoha comidoha vivido
nosotros, nosotrashemos habladohemos comidohemos vivido
vosotros, vosotrashabéis habladohabéis comidohabéis vivido
ellos, ellas, ustedeshan habladohan comidohan vivido

The present perfect: he hablado

haber (present: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han) + invariable past participle. Reports past actions in a time frame still open or relevant now; in much of Spain it also covers 'today/this week'. The auxiliary and participle are never split.

  • Hoy he trabajado mucho. — Today I have worked a lot.
  • ¿Alguna vez has estado en Perú? — Have you ever been to Peru?

questions

How many verb conjugations does Spanish have?

Three, named by the infinitive's ending: -ar (hablar), -er (comer) and -ir (vivir). In the present, -er and -ir verbs differ only in the nosotros and vosotros forms: comemos, coméis; vivimos, vivís.

Which Spanish verbs are irregular?

Many of the most frequent ones: ser, estar, ir, tener, hacer, poder and querer among them. Most change only some forms — the stem vowel (quiero, puedo), the yo form (tengo, hago) or the preterite, which takes a new stem and endings without a written accent (tuve, hice) — and conjugate regularly elsewhere.

How are the perfect tenses formed?

With a form of haber and the past participle: he hablado, he comido, he vivido. A regular participle ends in -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er and -ir verbs); a few are irregular, such as hecho, dicho and visto. After haber the participle never changes.
